So, it's pretty easy to get married in Australia. These are the legal requirements
I will check for as a celebrant, before I can marry you.
-Both have to be 18 or over
-You cannot already be married
-You cannot be close related
To explain it a bit further.
If someone is under 18, there are very exceptional circumstances and parental consent, and a court order are required.
You cannot still be married to someone as it is not only very frown upon in our
society, but bigamy is very much also illegal. If you are divorced, I will have to
see the original divorce document.
When it comes to marrying a family member you cannot by any circumstances
marry your parent, grandparent, child, or grandchild. Regardless of whether the
relationship is biological or through adoption.
Then there is a couple of other things before you can get hitched!
-You must lodge a NOIM -Notice of Intended Marriage, at least one month before the wedding. I will help you.
-The ceremony must be conducted by a registered authorised marriage celebrant, like myself, (or a religious minister recognised by law)
-Both parties must freely consent to the marriage. It cannot be coerced, and I will speak to both parties to make sure it's not forced by any means.
-You must understand the nature of marriage (i.e. be mentally capable and understand what marriage means in legal terms.
